What almost became firewood in friend Jack's stove was thankfully recognized as wonderful, curly tiger-striped Sugar Maple. Such beautifully figured material is always sought by artisans whose hands work wood. Both lid and box of this piece are graced with chatoyant stripes of wavy grain. The darker bark inclusion on the front (second photo) provides a contrasting focal point, as does the Walnut pull.

The finish is a soft, silky semi-gloss.

Poplar burls are not easy to find, but are well worth the hunt; they're light in weight, but aren't lightweights when it comes to looks. With birdseye and curly figure in the same piece, this keepsake box represents poplar burl well. The domed lid is topped with an African Blackwood pull.

Smooth semi-gloss finish.

Black Locust Burl is rather a rarity, and difficult to obtain. It has a somewhat subtle beauty due to its light cream color, but its figure is all burl.
The darker bark inclusion in this keepsake box provides a contrasting focal point, as does the understated Walnut pull.

The finish is a soft, silky semi-gloss.

Continuing with the quest to learn the qualities and characteristics of different woods, I purchased a block of Almond wood. I found it to be entirely likeable: dense, hard,  handsome. The wood is very similar to Cherry in appearance and workability. It has a crisp, glassy, satin feel.  At the summit of the lid is a pull of two-toned Desert Ironwood. There's just a hint of turquoise inlay below the sapwood splash on the front of the box.
