Tulip Poplar Salad Bowl (BW351)

Here's a Black Cherry salad bowl with flowing grain lines, nicely sized for the family table. A textured pattern just below the rim on the outside of the bowl adds a tactile detail. Being cherry wood, the bowl should darken over time, taking on a wonderful cherry color and patina.

Finished with Bowlwood mineral oil and beeswax, which can be renewed at any time by applying more mineral oil and/or beeswax.

While making this thick-walled Black Cherry bowl, the thought came to me that "this looks like the kind of bowl a medieval monk might have used for his breakfast of mush". Who knows. At any rate, it makes a fine salad bowl for one, monk or not.
A slightly raised band below the rim is textured with a woodburned pattern.

Black Cherry, the fine furniture wood, makes a very pleasing salad bowl, and only gets better with time as it develops enhanced color and a patina.  A woodburned pattern below the rim on the outside of the bowl frames graceful grain lines.

A colorful salad of crisp greens and garden-fresh veggies will be nicely underscored by this Tulip Poplar salad bowl. You can read more about, and see photos of, the Tuliptree that supplied the wood in this blog article. There are a couple touches of natural Tuliptree heartwood color on the rim.

Medium Cherry Salad Bowl (BW338)

A large Black Cherry tree that had graced a lakeside home in the Berkshires of western Massachusetts had to be taken down, yielding the log for this hefty salad bowl. Its walls are nearly an inch thick, imparting a presence to this bowl reminiscent of colonial times. Being cherry wood, the bowl should darken over time, taking on a wonderful cherry color and patina. This bowl begs to be used.

Large Cherry Salad Bowl (BW337)

When a large Tulip Poplar tree was deemed unsafe and cut down by a local town, its wood was made available to friend Bob and me. This 18" salad bowl is a product of that beautiful tree, which was 4 feet in diameter. You can read more about, and see photos of, the Tuliptree wood harvest in this blog article.

A small decoration  is woodburned on one side of the bowl (inside and out). Tulip Poplar heartwood has a greenish-brown color overall; a few patches of natural violet color appear on the rim.

At 18" in diameter, this is a very sizable salad bowl, suitable for the largest of families or parties. Finished with Bowlwood mineral oil and beeswax (more info here).

Speckled Maple Wood Bowl (BW288)

The Monk's Mush (Salad) Bowl (BW340)

Occasionally a piece of wood reveals some unexpected features when it's worked. This Red Maple bowl is an example of that kind of surprise; it was streaked with narrow stain lines that, when the wood was hollowed into a bowl, became an interesting splash of speckles.
Maple has long been a traditional wood for bowls, but the streak pattern gives this one a little extra visual impact.

Hand-rubbed semi-gloss finish.
