Red Oak Burl Wood Vase Form (OA116)
A mighty New England Red Oak grew the burl for this vase form that is alive with wild grain, and is inlaid with turquoise. There is a natural void on one side (see second thumbnail below); due to this, the vessel could only be partially hollowed. It's capped with a Cherry collar (with 5/8 inch hole). In tribute to its stout parent tree, this gem weighs in at about 3 pounds. It's satin smooth, and the turquoise inlay highlights the grain that only nature can create. This vase form could hold a small amount of dried flowers, but its beauty may be best enjoyed as is. The finish is multiple coats of tung oil varnish, buffed and polished with hard carnauba wax to a medium gloss sheen. Diameter: 51/4 inches at the shoulder Height: 73/4 inches Price: $325 Shipping: $12 to U.S. destinations. Contact me for international rates.
This hollow vessel was turned from Boxelder Burl, and features many birdseyes, blushes of red color, bark inclusions, a Jarrah Burl neck with natural edge, and more. The red blush is very common in Boxelder wood, adding a touch of warmth; it's probably caused by a fungus invading the tree. In the first and last thumbnails below, you can see an area that appears 3-dimensional, reflecting light differently as you rotate the vessel, a gem-like effect known as "chatoyance". The bark inclusions are surrounded by birdseye figure, which also encompasses the top of the vessel. The applied Jarrah Burl neck caps the piece; its natural edge complements the bark streaks. There is a hole through the neck so the vessel can be used as a vase to hold dried flowers. Finely sanded, this lightweight vessel carries a hand rubbed urethane oil finish, buffed and polished with carnauba wax to a satin lustre. Diameter: 5 inches at the shoulder Height: 81/2 inches Price: $250 Shipping: $12 to U.S. destinations. Contact me for international rates.
Tasmanian Blackwood (also known as Black Acacia) is considered by many in the musical instrument world to be a possible replacement for its Acacia relative, rare Hawaiian Koa. With its rich, warm color, attractive grain pattern, and sapwood highlight at the rim, this vase will stand out on any table, mantle, or bookshelf. Finely sanded, and finished in tung oil, it was buffed and polished with hard carnauba wax to a very soft feeling, glass-smooth satin sheen. Please note that this vase is intended to hold dry materials, not water; or, display it as is to just appreciate its beauty. Diameter: 51/2 inches at the rim, 4 inches at the base Height: 7 inches Price: $250 Shipping: $12 to U.S. destinations. Contact me for international rates.
A crotch in the trunk of a Cherry tree provided the turning blank for this classic Greek hollow vessel. The bark between the two forks of the trunk now frames the focal point of heartwood, set against patches of white sapwood. For the finishing touch... a neck of Jarrah Burl, with its natural edged rim. Although this hollow vase is intended to be a display piece on its own merits, there is a hole in the neck, so it can be used to hold dried flowers (no water please). The vessel was hand turned on the lathe, sanded, finished with multiple hand rubbed coats of urethane oil, then buffed and polished with carnauba wax to a pleasingly smooth satin lustre. Diameter: 43/4 inches at the shoulder Height: 71/2 inches Price: $250 Shipping: $12 to U.S. destinations. Contact me for international rates.
