Manzanita Burl Jewelry Box w/ Turquoise Inlay (BX78)
| A gentle grasp of the Black Palm pull is all you need to lift the lid off this California mountain Manzanita Burl jewelry box. The earthy red/brown tones of this craggy burl wood are just right as a background for the crushed Turquoise inlay that highlights the natural fissures in the burl. A disk of Sugar Maple underscores the dappled, exotic Black Palm pull. The finish has been buffed and polished to a very smooth, soft satin luster. Diameter: 61/4 inches Height: 41/4 inches to top of pull Price: $175 Shipping: $12 to U.S. destinations. Contact me for international rates. |

Australian Mulga (an Acacia species) is a highly desirable wood that's difficult to obtain in the U.S. It has a creamy-yellow sapwood and rich, reddish-brown heartwood. This jewelry box was turned from a section of Mulga log in a way that retains the bright sapwood almost all the way around the lower portion of the box, while allowing the lustrous heartwood to emerge and rise from it into the lid. A few hairline cracks (that have been sealed tight) radiate from the lid's center, a reminder of the natural material the box is fashioned from. Lifting off the lid via the Wild Apple gumdrop pull reveals an Apple lift-out tray, for those small jewelry items you use regularly. A small bead detail at the bottom of the box echoes the rounded lip of the lid. The finish has been buffed and polished to a very smooth, soft satin luster. Diameter: 51/4 inches Height: 41/2 inches to top of pull Price: $230 Shipping: $12 to U.S. destinations. Contact me for international rates. |

| If you love the fragrance of camphor, you'll be delighted with this beautifully figured keepsake box of Camphor Laurel -- its aroma will last indefinitely, and greet you each time you're near it. A focal point on the front of the box is a dark grain area, and rich grain decorates all surfaces. There are small bead details at the bottom of the box, and where lid meets box. The lid, topped by a genuine Ebony ace-of-spades finial, will easily lift off. And once it's off, the fragrance that nature put in the wood will waft out to delight you. Keep this box where you'll see it every day- you'll want to open it that often! The outside is finished with a silky-smooth semi-gloss; the inside is finished with mineral oil, to allow the camphor fragrance to come through. | Amboyna Burl is arguably the king of burls, and is very desirable and expensive. While this piece does not have the birdseyes that give Amboyna burl its greatest value, it has very rich coloration and grain patterns. Amboyna has a somewhat pepper-like spicy aroma. This wood, in its non-burl form, is also known as Narra. A rare piece of Marri forms the pull on the lid. There is a small bead detail at the bottom of the box. This dense, hard wood has been polished to a satin lustre. Diameter: 4 inches Height: 4 inches Price: $140 Shipping: $12 to U.S. destinations. Contact me for international rates. |
| The richness of color and figure in Manzanita Burl are a treat for the eyes. Splashes of crushed Turquoise inlay add even more appeal to this jewelry box. A marble-like pull of Corian is the crowning touch. Of course, the title of "jewelry box" need not relegate this elegant container to a boudoir dresser top; like a gentleman in a tailored suit, it's in style anywhere. Smooth, soft satin finish. Diameter: 61/2 inches Height: 41/4 inches to top of pull Price: $175 Shipping: $12 to U.S. destinations. Contact me for international rates. |
| Butternut is a lighter weight relative of Walnut, and is just as delightful a wood to turn. Buckthorn (a small, shrubby tree) produces a very pretty orange/yellow wood, and polishes up well. In order to use a Buckthorn lid on this box, the Butternut was lightly dyed with an amber/red tone to warm its color up a bit, giving it a rich hue to blend with the dark highlights in the lid. The attractive grain lines in the Butternut vary in direction and appearance as you rotate the piece. The last photo shows a side of the box having a cloud-like layer pattern of annual rings. After turning and final sanding, a durable finish was applied, which was buffed smooth; then the piece was polished to a semi-gloss with fine waxes. Diameter: 31/2 inches Height: 31/4 inches Price: $80 Shipping: $12 to U.S. destinations. Contact me for international rates. |
| This is a sweet little keepsake box turned from a hunk of Massachusetts Black Cherry, capped with a lid of mellow-toned Linden, which is topped with a genuine Ebony pull. Box and lid have matching double concentric detail rings (fine grooves) near their respective high points. A smooth satin finish, buffed with fine waxes, imparts a soft glow to the piece. Diameter: 43/4 inches Height: 4 inches to top of pull Price: $120 Shipping: $12 to U.S. destinations. Contact me for international rates. |
| Here's a Black Walnut box that contrasts the different growth bands of the tree, inner to outer... at the bottom, there's the darker Walnut heartwood we're all familiar with; above that is a band of lighter colored sapwood. Just below the rim is a band of inner bark, topped by the outer bark. The rim dips on two sides due to the curvature of the log. Annual rings are evident in the grain lines that echo the rim's curves. The lid is of Yellowheart, with a Walnut flame pull. A medium-gloss finish was applied, which was buffed smooth; then the piece was polished with fine waxes. Diameter: 51/2 inches Height: 6 inches Price: $140 Shipping: $12 to U.S. destinations. | The naturally light tones of Norway Maple are contrasted against the deep burgundy of a Bloodwood lid in this delightfully plump little box. Grasping the Rhododendron pull, you can easily lift the lid off the box with thumb and forefinger. Norway Maple is a "hard" Maple, very similar to Sugar ("Rock") Maple, and is planted widely in parts of New England. A medium-gloss finish was applied, which was buffed smooth; then the piece was polished with fine waxes. Diameter: 4 inches Height: 43/4 inches Price: $120 Shipping: $12 to U.S. destinations. | Slippery Elm (aka Red Elm) is the medium brown shell of this wooden box, forming the carved tree silhouettes and lid. A liner of Gingko was inserted after the carving was completed, and the box was hollowed. The lid is topped with a pull of Black Palm. Medium-gloss lacquer finish. Diameter: 31/4 inches Height: 33/4 inches Price: $135 Shipping: $12 to U.S. destinations. Contact me for international rates. |

Butternut and Black Walnut are "cousins", with the former being known as "White Walnut". Butternut is lighter in color and density than Walnut, but is just as pretty. It's unfortunately becoming increasingly difficult to find in the eastern forests, being affected by a blight that is threatening its existence (like so many other species). A keepsake box of Butternut may become a treasured heirloom piece in the not-too-distant future because of this decline. Topping this hand-turned wooden box is a lid with integral pull of Black Walnut. The characteristic scalloped grain lines of Butternut are evident in the last photo. A soft satin finish protects the wood, which was buffed smooth and polished with fine waxes. Diameter: 41/2 inches Height: 31/2 inches Price: $125 Shipping: $12 to U.S. destinations. Yes, this keepsake box is made from a woody vine, the Oriental Bittersweet Vine. Although this introduced species has become a nuisance tree climber, its rough-textured bark hides a beautiful inner wood that begs to be turned on a lathe. If you have any friends who are wood enthusiasts, you can challenge them to identify this one; my guess is they won't be able to. I haven't found anyone yet who could, most likely because few people have used or even seen this wood before. Many unceremoniously cut the vines to stop them from choking the trees they climb, but never consider it as a source of usable wood. Sized to hold those precious little treasures that never seem to find a home of their own, this wood box has a soft satin finish. Diameter: 31/4 inches Height: 41/4 inches Price: $75 Shipping: $12 to U.S. destinations. Contact me for international rates. |
