Spalted Sugar Maple Bowl (BW117)
| With a trumpet-flare shape, this showy ornamental bowl displays the beauty of spalted New England Sugar Maple. "Spalting" is the result of the activity of fungi that invade the tree. As they penetrate the wood, they feed on its sugars, and leave the beautiful, random black lines that resemble India-ink drawings... always a prized find. This bowl features some very nice examples of spalting. It's entertaining to discover what you can find in the line drawings; for example, there is a bell shape depicted in the interior bottom of this bowl (see the last thumbnail). At 8-1/2 inches in diameter, and 4-3/4 inches tall, the bowl is nicely sized to be a display piece on a mantle or bookshelf. The finish is multiple thin coats of hand-rubbed varnish, buffed and polished with carnauba wax to a soft satin sheen; it's very smooth to the touch. Price: $120 Shipping: $12 to U.S. destinations. | One of the classic New England bowl woods is Sugar Maple, also known as Rock Maple, from the tree that gives us maple syrup, and fine furniture lumber. This bowl is a traditional "salad bowl" shape, and features a number of pinholes and galleries from the activity of beetle larvae, as well as interesting grain and earth tones. It measures 11 inches in diameter, and 21/2 inches tall. The finish is multiple coats of tung oil, buffed and polished with carnauba wax to a soft sheen; it's very smooth to the touch. Price: $125 Shipping: $12 to U.S. destinations. Contact me for international rates. |
| A fine wood bowl of Bigleaf Maple Burl. It features plenty of birdseye figure, a few bark inclusions, some natural voids on the underside, and a partial natural rim. This is a very lightweight bowl for its size, and it's a delight to hold. The color is a warm orange/tan, similar to cherry burl. With a diameter of 10 inches, and height of just under 2 inches, this burl wood bowl is nicely sized to be a centerpiece. Click on the last thumbnail below to get a better idea of size. The finish is multiple coats of tung oil, buffed and polished with hard carnauba wax to a soft satin lustre. Price: $220 Shipping: $12 to U.S. destinations. Contact me for international rates. |
Bigleaf Maple Burl Bowl (BW101)
| Bigleaf Maple Burl is one of my favorite woods for bowls... it's usually striking in appearance, lightweight, with varying colors. This bowl is a beauty... silvery grey/brown, with many birdseyes, wild grain, a widely flared shape, and a natural bark edge. I often prefer to keep the random natural edge of the burl in the rim. It measures 10 by 7 inches wide, and 11/4 inches tall; perfect for a candy dish, but this delightful bowl is too pretty to cover up. The finish is multiple coats of tung oil, buffed and polished with carnauba wax to a soft medium-gloss lustre. Some of the birdseyes in the foreground of the rim appear to jump out in the last photo, but that's an illusion; the surface is very silky smooth. Price: $105 Shipping: $12 to U.S. destinations. Rare Australian Black Morrel Burl Bowl (BW102)
| There's no doubt that Australian burls are among the most beautiful in the world, belonging mainly to species of Eucalyptus trees. Here is a very rare species, Black Morrel, and it's quite pretty. I chose to leave the natural edge of the burl at the rim, which provides a light-colored sapwood border all around the rich, darker heartwood interior. The hollow of the bowl features many dark brown, birdseye-like patterns, and is surrounded by the wavy line figure at the outer edges. This is the only Black Morrel I have turned, or have available. The bowl measures approximately 10 inches long, 9 inches wide, and 21/4 inches tall; the hollow is 51/2 inches in diameter. While it may be perfect for a candy dish, it doesn't need to be functional to be appreciated. The finish is 8 coats of tung oil, buffed and polished with carnauba wax to a durable, soft satin sheen. Price: $275 Shipping: $12 to U.S. destinations. Contact me for international rates. |
Australian Yellow Box Burl Bowl (BW103)
| Australian Yellow Box is another species of Eucalyptus tree; the burls have a mellow, honey-brown heartwood color, surrounded by a lighter, cream-colored sapwood. This bowl retains the natural burl edge for the rim, and shows off the sapwood/heartwood contrast; it's a pleasing example of Yellow Box Burl . It measures approximately 103/4 inches long, 81/2 inches wide, and 2 inches tall. The hollow is 61/2 inches in diameter. The finish is multiple coats of tung oil, buffed and polished with carnauba wax to a smooth, soft satin sheen. Price: $220 Shipping: $12 to U.S. destinations. Contact me for international rates. |

Walnut Burl & Spalted Cottonwood Bowl (BW124)
| This beautifully figured wooden bowl was turned from a California Claro Walnut burl, and has a spalted New England Cottonwood rim applied. How's that for coast-to-coast appeal? As you can see in the main photo, the walnut features some three dimensional curly figure, with a mixture of light and dark tones. The contrasting spalted cottonwood rim was glued up from six segments, then assembled to the walnut bowl and turned to final shape. The bowl is 111/2 inches across, 31/2 inches high. After careful sanding, a finish of tung oil varnish was applied, which was then buffed and polished with carnauba wax to a lustrous satin sheen. Price: $400 Shipping: $12 to U.S. destinations. | A footed New England Black Cherry Burl Bowl with the natural burl edge rim, loaded with birdseyes. The bowl is 11 inches in diameter, 31/4 inches high. Sorry, this one is sold. |
"The Owl" - English Walnut & Hackberry Bowl (BW153)
| A stately old Connecticut English Walnut tree supplied the beautifully figured wood for this bowl. A rim of segmented Hackberry frames the bold pattern of the Walnut's cocoa colored heartwood and its lighter sapwood. With a bit of imagination, you can see an owl's face in the third photo, with two knots forming its eyes. I can imagine a Great Horned Owl perched in the old Walnut tree in the dim light of a crescent moon night, watching patiently for his next meal. At 121/4 inches in diameter, 4 inches in height, "The Owl" is nicely sized for a table display centerpiece. This fine bowl is lightweight, and is protected by a lustrous satin finish that invites handling. Price: $250 Shipping: $12 to U.S. destinations. Contact me for international rates. |
